There are a lot of sewing/craft blogs I really love, and near the top of that list is this mama makes stuff. Recently Carrie posted a portable fabric high chair - so awesome! I thought it would be just perfect for an upcoming trip Oscar and I are taking to NYC for a week of friends and NEW MOON! wooo! Yes, I am a Twi-mom, so sue me. NEW MOON! :)
Back to the fabric high chair. I wanted one. I needed one! So far, Carrie has not posted the dimensions. But, it looked easy enough. 3 rectangles of fabric and some velcro ... no biggie. I estimated the dimensions and sewed one up. Ta-da!
Like I said, it is three rectangles. I cut my waist strap to be 6" x 43", but if I were to do it again, I think I would make it about 6 inches shorter (6" x 37"). It doesn't need to be quite so long.
The connector piece is 6" x 4". The seat piece is 20" x 10". There is a thin layer of batting between each piece, and a long strip of velcro on either end of the waist strap.
Piece of cake right? I'm curious to see how my measurements match up to Carrie's. Hopefully someday she'll post instructions so I can make this perfect!

Oh wow, I love it!
I'm guessing you might need the top rectangle long if the chair has a different back and you have to wrap it all the way around or something.
Did you use padding?
Duh, I just read that you used batting. Okay question answered. :)
I've been eying this same thing, but am not as talented as you to just be able to try it on my own. I am so excited I can make this now! Thanks :)
Thank you so much Jill!
Thanks for the pattern and thanks for linking me to the other blog - Ive got a new one for my googlereader now!
You are so crafty!!!!!
That is awesome! I love the fabric you chose!!
This is genius!! I don't even have kids and I think it's awesome!!
aw-ah-ah-awsome!!!!
So there is no Velcro on the seat rectangle? It just folds over?
Thanks this is great!
oh man that is a GREAT project! I'm totally making one!
This would be a perfect baby gift...I really need to learn to sew.
AWESOME!!! This is going on my to do list. Thanks so much for posting this. I'm not as talented as you are to just whip one up from the picture.
I love this!! And the fabrics you chose are fantastic!! love them!
That si so cool! I love the fabric and the idea is just awesome!
Where do you get all your fabric? I live in a small area and we don't have many fabric stores that carry anything good.
Thanks
Looks like me and some other readers are thinking alike, this would make a killer baby present. Great fabric choice too.
So handy...both the idea and you. On my to do list now. PS LOVED your tractor...totally voted for it last week.
Jill, I love it! The fabric is gorgoes and being able to wash it is key. Wanna make me two! You are brilliant and we are counting down to seeing you!
Get here NOW!!!!!!! Can't wait to see you and sweet O. I need one of those for Hugh - he won't stay in his chair for anything. Can you imagine one of those around a toddler? ;)
Jill, VERY cool. Love your version. Great fabric choice! Thanks for sharing the dimensions.
omgoodness!!! i love this. i don't have a lil one, but i'd still like to make it. maybe for a friend's lil one. hmmmmm
I Love it! i've seen them around but their like $40. thanks for the tutorial I'll have to give a shot! p.s. Grabbed a button Thanks a bunch!
These are great! I had one that my mom made 28 years ago for my daughter! we called it a Grandma's highchair. (you can put phone books under the babe too.) The only difference was mine had ties that went around the baby and back of the chair (baby can't undo it).I love that you figured it out on your own!
Of course my kids are too old for this, but I think I'll make one anyway. I babysit off and on for friends and you never know. This takes up a ton less space than even a portable high chair. Awesome job!
This would make a great grandmothers gift! Thanks for sharing.
Looks great Jill! I planning a week of tutorials starting next monday so check back in with me. Although, I don't think your pattern needs any improving!
Very cute!
I had to restrain myself to not make one last night, but today, well that's a whole new story. Cant wait to make one! I am curious about the seat piece also, there is no velcro there? It just folds over?
Yep, the seat piece just folds over, no velcro. Although, I doubt it would hurt. If your baby needs extra restraints, you might want to add extra velcro. :)
Such a clever idea! And so cute too!
I took your measurements and made my own today, and then posted a tutorial of how I made mine on my blog (linking here, of course)... http://burkeshires.blogspot.com/2009/11/travel-high-chair-tutorial.html
hope your readers can use it! enjoy!
My Mom has one of these at her house that she made when we were kids. It is a true vintage now...you should see the fabric.
:-) Of course it isn't exactly like yours, but everyone should hold on to the one that they make because one day you might want it for the grandkids. :-) and since it is fabric, you can store it with no problem! I love it!
i have the same chairs, crazy! cute idea, beautiful execution!
I love your fabric choices! Where do you get your fabric? This is adorable by the way!!
Pure Genius!!! LOVE IT!!!
I love the idea! What a clever girl you are!
I LOVE IT! How clever! We have an old high chair and it doesn't have a buckle. This is the perfect solution! Thank you for sharing!
I love the fabric and the portability of it all..but does your little one fit up to the table, or do you have a booster seat for him to sit on? I know my girls won't reach the table sitting on a regular chair. We have some booster seats that my MIL made out of cans (condensed milk cans, cardboard and fabric) that work great, but don't have a buckle. I think this may be the answer. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for another great idea! I love that this is so easy to make! I've linked to you over at my blog...
Amazing design!! Check out the wide range of Kids Chair from casamodern.
So clever and pretty!
Hey Jill!
Remember me? I just found your blog through a friend. What a funny coincidence and what a small blogging world it is.
Oh, and this is such a great idea.
LOVE this! we tied my daughter to a chair the other week with a towel...haha. this would have been a lot classier.
Jess
p.s. i LOVE your blog.
Here is the tutorial for the Fabric High Chair - All finished!
Fabric Travel High Chair
This is SUCH a great idea!! What a perfect baby gift!!
Thanks for posting this Jill. I made one last Friday in about 2hrs - I shocked myself!!
Just one thing I notice now that I have one of these little babies of my own, is it only works the way you have shown if the chair you're using has slats/bars at the back to weave through.
Would love your suggestion for a solid backed chair... :)
now that is seriously clever! wow. I gotta make one- my husband always gives me a hard time whenever we go somewhere for dinner and don't have a place to put our son....well, besides on our laps :0) Great idea- thanks!
oh no. another project on my to-do list. I think I'm pushing this one to the top though. and I'm just going to use this in place of my existing high chair. WAY less space... and machine washable. MY KINDA CRAFT!
I love this! So easy to carry with you and it looks great to boot. I made one today, it took around 2 hours. I didn't take the 6" off the top rectangle and I'm glad I didn't because you need that extra 6" on a solid back chair. This is going to stay in my purse so I always have something on hand when we're out with baby. Thanks so much for posting this pattern!
Hey Jill! Thanks for sharing. I made one for my little boy and I added another straps to be secure for my squirmy little one.

That is so cool, I really need to do something like that, for my toddlers table at meal times. That kid of mine is all over the place, if he thinks he can't move he won't. This would give a great illusion of being locked in, but he could get out when he needed to.
umma
This is very cool! I've got my new fabric in the washing machine right now so I can make one tonight!
Jill thanks for the idea and the measurements. My little boy is 5 months now and loves to be at the table with the rest of the family. I posted my effort on my blog. Hope you're feeling well in these final weeks of your pregnancy. X

You are very crafty. How did you make that thing? It is perfect for mothers who are having a hard time taking care of their babies.
Did you see that This Mama Makes Stuff did post a tutorial? I'm impressed at how close your measurements were! I'm going to make one this week for a baby shower gift.
This is a good idea because it's very important babies feel comfortable when they are seating on their chairs, buy the way the child there is beautiful.
Thx for sharing! This is a great tutorial and I can't wait to try it out. This will be perfect for my daughter when we go out :) I posted it on my blog and linked it back to your site and this mama makes stuff, hope that's ok. I love this idea!!
Thanks I just realised that now my twins have started solids I need something for the Easter long weekend away so I just whipped one of these up while my twins were down for a nap, in between packing and making lunch for the four yr old. OK so I've cheated and used only 1 layer of double sided furnishing fabric and not bothered with the batting and second piece of fabric but it looks great and if it works well I'll make 2 "proper" ones before our "big" holiday in 2 weeks.
Thank you very much for sharing.
Jessica
Such beautiful eyes! thanks for the tutorial.
Wow what a wonderful idea. I have just made one, using yours as a guide. So simple & easy - it's perfect! Thank you so much for sharing xoxoxo
