There are a lot of sewing/craft blogs I really love, and near the top of that list is this mama makes stuff. Recently Carrie posted a portable fabric high chair - so awesome! I thought it would be just perfect for an upcoming trip Oscar and I are taking to NYC for a week of friends and NEW MOON! wooo! Yes, I am a Twi-mom, so sue me. NEW MOON! :)
Back to the fabric high chair. I wanted one. I needed one! So far, Carrie has not posted the dimensions. But, it looked easy enough. 3 rectangles of fabric and some velcro ... no biggie. I estimated the dimensions and sewed one up. Ta-da!
Like I said, it is three rectangles. I cut my waist strap to be 6" x 43", but if I were to do it again, I think I would make it about 6 inches shorter (6" x 37"). It doesn't need to be quite so long.
The connector piece is 6" x 4". The seat piece is 20" x 10". There is a thin layer of batting between each piece, and a long strip of velcro on either end of the waist strap.
Piece of cake right? I'm curious to see how my measurements match up to Carrie's. Hopefully someday she'll post instructions so I can make this perfect!

I'm guessing you might need the top rectangle long if the chair has a different back and you have to wrap it all the way around or something.
Did you use padding?

These are great! I had one that my mom made 28 years ago for my daughter! we called it a Grandma's highchair. (you can put phone books under the babe too.) The only difference was mine had ties that went around the baby and back of the chair (baby can't undo it).I love that you figured it out on your own!
Of course my kids are too old for this, but I think I'll make one anyway. I babysit off and on for friends and you never know. This takes up a ton less space than even a portable high chair. Awesome job!

Yep, the seat piece just folds over, no velcro. Although, I doubt it would hurt. If your baby needs extra restraints, you might want to add extra velcro. :)

My Mom has one of these at her house that she made when we were kids. It is a true vintage now...you should see the fabric.
:-) Of course it isn't exactly like yours, but everyone should hold on to the one that they make because one day you might want it for the grandkids. :-) and since it is fabric, you can store it with no problem! I love it!

I love the fabric and the portability of it all..but does your little one fit up to the table, or do you have a booster seat for him to sit on? I know my girls won't reach the table sitting on a regular chair. We have some booster seats that my MIL made out of cans (condensed milk cans, cardboard and fabric) that work great, but don't have a buckle. I think this may be the answer. Thanks for sharing!

Just one thing I notice now that I have one of these little babies of my own, is it only works the way you have shown if the chair you're using has slats/bars at the back to weave through.

oh no. another project on my to-do list. I think I'm pushing this one to the top though. and I'm just going to use this in place of my existing high chair. WAY less space... and machine washable. MY KINDA CRAFT!
I love this! So easy to carry with you and it looks great to boot. I made one today, it took around 2 hours. I didn't take the 6" off the top rectangle and I'm glad I didn't because you need that extra 6" on a solid back chair. This is going to stay in my purse so I always have something on hand when we're out with baby. Thanks so much for posting this pattern!

That is so cool, I really need to do something like that, for my toddlers table at meal times. That kid of mine is all over the place, if he thinks he can't move he won't. This would give a great illusion of being locked in, but he could get out when he needed to.

Did you see that This Mama Makes Stuff did post a tutorial? I'm impressed at how close your measurements were! I'm going to make one this week for a baby shower gift.
This is a good idea because it's very important babies feel comfortable when they are seating on their chairs, buy the way the child there is beautiful.

Thanks I just realised that now my twins have started solids I need something for the Easter long weekend away so I just whipped one of these up while my twins were down for a nap, in between packing and making lunch for the four yr old. OK so I've cheated and used only 1 layer of double sided furnishing fabric and not bothered with the batting and second piece of fabric but it looks great and if it works well I'll make 2 "proper" ones before our "big" holiday in 2 weeks.
