I have a new favorite way of making bloomers/diaper covers: elastic thread!
Do you hate making elastic casings, or is that just me? Instead, I've been making bloomers out of jersey fabric and shirring the waist and leg openings with elastic thread.
I use Dana's Perfect Diaper Cover pattern to cut the fabric (old t-shirts work great for this). Before sewing the front and back pieces together, I sew two lines of elastic thread on the leg and three rows to the waist. Then sew together at the sides and crotch and they are done, lickety-split. You don't even have to fold over the seams on the openings, because jersey won't fray. They take literally 10 minutes to make. As a bonus, they are super stretchy, so I think they'll fit a long time. Hurray for that.
That's all for today. Hope you're having a great week!

so simple. I love the elastic thread option!
How is that not exciting--10 minutes to cute bottoms? I have never made bloomers but now I'm totally excited to do so... ; )
How can you call that not exciting?! zero to done in 10 minutes, & costs only the couple pennies for the elastic thread, 'cause you're upcycling? That is VERY exciting! I wonder if I could get my 5 year old to wear some? lol
so cute :)

LOVE IT!!! absolutely simple & i love the elastic thread!!! <3
Exactly @ Tristin lol, 10 minutes is what makes this very exciting. Great post as always. You are very talented.
love it! yeah, it seem like elastic thread is a magic fix for anything that might take too long otherwise! :-) my friend just made a skirt using elastic thread and an old xl t-shirt. turned out nice!
Genius! I love making cute diaper covers but I HATE doing the elastic around the legs. Definitely giving this a try. Maybe even today! :)
I too HATE doing elastic casing, especially small elastic casing. Genius.
I love elastic thread too! I haven't made diaper covers lately (ever?) but it looks like it is more comfortable for baby's legs too.
I wondered if it could be done and now that I see how cute yours are I'm going to do it too! I'm glad i'm not the only one who hates casings! Thanks Jill!
I just used elastic thread for the first time on a dress for my daughter and was thinking about some matching bloomers. This is perfect timing!!!
I have never used elastic thread...might give this a try because I have cut out four pair of bloomers for my baby niece!
Yes, I pretty much loathe making casings. lol! I have a Brother that doesn't shirr easily, but I think I may have to buy a cheapy machine just to be able to do it!
LOVE. Now I don't have to make excuses about not sitting down to make bloomers to match my babe's dresses -- I can just make bloomers instead! This is Brilliant!
brilliant!
You have no idea how perfect this timing is. i was just complaining to one of the ladies at daycare how I can't find any bloomers - and baby girl needs to wear them under her dresses for sanitary reasons (and she has so many cute dresses to wear!!) - this is a perfect solution - I was wondering if I could do something like this....now I know I can...and later this week I will!!
I LOVE elastic thread!! It's my favorite way to make bloomers, skirts, tops/dresses. ^_^

love this! and it solves my problem of always being unsure how large to make the elastic openings at the legs!
I will absolutely have to try this--I have some t-shirt bedsheets that need some repurposing, and this idea would be perfect! Thanks for the inspiration, and for yet another reason to try elastic thread.

I have made a few of Dana's diaper covers and the elastic casing is my least favorite part. I totally want to try this! Thanks for the great idea!
Oh man this gets me very excited!! I made a pair for my daughter but hated the elastic casing around the legs because it came out all crazy looking :( But this I think I can do! Never having sewn with elastic but I gotta try sometime right?! I need to sew some diaper covers! So cute indeed & 10 mins! that's amazing!!
Thank you!
